Don’t Risk the Drive

31 October 2025

As the festive season approaches, Derbyshire’s pubs, clubs and venues will be buzzing with Christmas parties, nights out and catch-ups. But before the first drink is poured, there’s one thing we’re asking everyone to think about: Don’t Risk the Drive.

This November, the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Derbyshire is launching a county-wide campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of drink driving – and the simple, practical steps you can take to avoid it.

Don’t Risk the Drive encourages people to plan ahead before heading out for a drink. Whether it’s a night out with friends, a work do, or a festive gathering, making a decision before the first round can help keep you – and others – safe.

The dangers of drink driving

According to road safety campaign THINK!, even small amounts of alcohol can impair your ability to drive safely. In the past year 30 people in Derbyshire were killed or seriously injured (KSI) in collisions where drink driving was a factor.

Young men are particularly over-represented as drivers in drink drive collisions, and many underestimate the risks. In Derbyshire, 88% of alcohol-related KSI incidents last year involved male drivers. THINK! research shows that 50% of young male drivers say they intend to be sensible but often get carried away when socialising – putting themselves and others at risk.

The consequences of drink driving go far beyond fines and points on your licence. You could lose your job, your freedom, or even your life.

Practical ways to stay safe

There are plenty of ways to enjoy your night and still get home safely:

People on a bus

Be the designated driver
Stick to 0% or soft drinks and stay in control.

Plan to stay over
Book a hotel or stay at a mate’s. It’s safer and easier.

Join the 0% revolution!

Being the designated driver doesn’t mean missing out. With the growing range of 0% alcohol drinks available, you can enjoy the taste of your favourite beer, cider, wine or cocktail – without the effects of alcohol.

Choosing alcohol-free options means you stay sharp, safe, and fully in control behind the wheel. It’s a responsible choice that helps keep Derbyshire’s roads safer for everyone, especially during evenings out, celebrations, and festive events.

This month, we’re partnering with local drinks brands, including Chesterfield-based Global Brands, to raise awareness of the range of 0% options available for designated drivers and non-drinkers.

Opting for 0% options allows you to:

  • Stay safe: Alcohol impairs reaction times and decision-making. 0% drinks let you enjoy the night without compromising your ability to drive safely.
  • Enjoy the taste: Modern alcohol-free drinks are crafted to deliver the same flavour experience as their alcoholic counterparts, without the hangover.
  • Be social, stay sober: You don’t have to sit out the fun. With alcohol-free options, you can raise a glass and be part of the celebration.

Whether you’re heading to a pub, party, or dinner with friends, being the designated driver is a vital role – and now, it’s easier than ever to enjoy it. So next time you’re out, look for the 0% options and drive home safely, knowing you’ve made a smart and considerate choice.
