More than 1,000 e-scooters have been taken off the streets of Derbyshire since a zero-tolerance crackdown launched to address public concerns.
Derbyshire Police has been trailblazing a robust ‘seize and dispose’ policy since 1st November 2024 to tackle the growing menace of illegal and dangerously ridden e-scooters on the county’s roads and in public spaces.
The fast-track measure, supported by Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts, has now seen more than 1,000 e-scooters immediately seized and removed from the roads. This tough approach has put Derbyshire ahead of the curve in dealing with reckless or anti-social driving of the vehicles.
The government has now introduced national measures allowing police to crush or dispose of seized anti-social vehicles much faster than the previous 14-day rule.
It is illegal to ride a privately owned e-scooter on a public road, pavement or public space in the UK because they cannot be legally insured.
Those who flout the law can face prosecution through the courts as well as the seizure and immediate destruction of their e-scooter.
Anyone who causes serious harm to another person while riding an e-scooter will be prosecuted in the same way as if they were riding a motorcycle or driving a car.

Behind every discussion about domestic abuse and sexual violence are real people, real experiences and real journeys to recovery.
Deputy PCC Dr. Fatima Eltinay recently joined Derbyshire Constabulary at a national roundtable hosted by Hestia Charity, bringing together policing professionals from across the country to explore how victims and survivors can be better supported.
🎤 During her contribution, Fatima reflected on the profound impact that domestic abuse and sexual violence can have on individuals, families and communities. She spoke about the vital role of policing in protecting victims, building trust and confidence, and ensuring everyone is treated with fairness, dignity and respect.
🤝 A key focus of the discussion was the importance of independent support services, which provide specialist advice, advocacy and practical support to help victims navigate their options and rebuild their lives.
💬 As the third national police roundtable hosted by Hestia, the event also explored the unique barriers that police officers and staff may face when affected by domestic abuse, and how organisations can create supportive environments where people feel safe and confident to seek help.
Working alongside partners and policing colleagues from across the country, the roundtable provided an opportunity to share learning, challenge assumptions and strengthen approaches to supporting victims and survivors.

Recently, Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Nicolle Ndiweni-Roberts attended the annual Amber Valley Borough Council Crime and Disorder Meeting, where she heard directly from local councillors about the issues that matter most to residents in their wards.
Discussions covered a range of topics including road safety, anti-social behaviour, violence against women and girls, and rural crime. The meeting provided an important opportunity for councillors to share local concerns, highlight community priorities, and discuss how partners can work together to address them.
Nicolle welcomed the opportunity to listen to the experiences and perspectives of elected members, helping to ensure that local voices continue to inform policing and community safety priorities across Amber Valley.
Also in attendance was Inspector Brooks, who provided updates on local policing activity and responded to operational questions relating to the area.
