Scrutiny volunteers honoured by Police and Crime Commissioner to mark National Volunteers’ Week

19 June 2023

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster celebrated the work of independent scrutiny volunteers across the county as the UK marked National Volunteers Week.

The Commissioner hosted a celebration event at Derbyshire Constabulary HQ’s to recognise the dedication and passion of the many volunteers who help her hold the Chief Constable and the force to account on behalf of the public. These include members of her Stop and Search Scrutiny Panel, Police Dog Welfare Team and her team of Independent Custody Visitors.

The Commissioner has pledged to increase the number of volunteers who support the work of the police in her Police and Crime Plan as part of her drive to deliver strong local policing. This includes the expansion of schemes such as Neighbourhood Watch and Community Speedwatch to help boost police visibility and empower communities to play an active role in crime prevention.

Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “Volunteers are vital to building safe and resilient communities. I would like to recognise the efforts of the many volunteers supporting my work and the work of the force in National Volunteers Week.

“I have increased the level of scrutiny of Derbyshire Constabulary since I was elected in 2021. Independent volunteers are essential to ensuring the force’s processes and systems are transparent.

“I know that they put significant time and effort in their roles and would like to thank them for their ongoing support. Their observations and feedback continue to make a difference.”

National Volunteers’ Week runs from June 1-7 and is held annually to celebrate the contribution of the UK’s community volunteers.
