Police and Crime Commissioner safeguards future of Ilkeston Police Station and saves taxpayers money

Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster has approved plans to protect the long-term future of Ilkeston Police Station – in a deal that will save the force and taxpayers more than £3m.

The Commissioner has agreed to buy the building and exit a previously agreed Public Finance Initiative (PFI) to save vital funds and ensure the station continues to act as a hub for the delivery of neighbourhood policing in Ilkeston and the surrounding areas.

Ilkeston Police Station is a modern building which has remained a focal part of community life in the town for the past 25 years.

The facility was originally purchased through a PFI and then leased over a 30-year term which expires in 2028/29. Purchasing the station allows the force to protect a critical piece of infrastructure and guarantee the future of the site – while also saving the force almost £1.3m in contract costs and the Treasury £1.9m in PFI subsidy payments.

Police and Crime Commissioner Angelique Foster said: “Keeping a robust and visible policing presence in our communities is a key priority for me.

“Ilkeston Police Station is a well-built, modern facility and serves our local communities and neighbourhood response officers well. It makes perfect sense to take ownership of this resource and protect its future for years to come.

“When I was elected to the role last year, I promised to do more to tackle neighbourhood crime and support the force to reduce anti-social behaviour while improving financial management and give taxpayers value for money. Ensuring our officers have the right technology and equipment – and are in the right place to be most effective – is fundamental to my plans and this project will ensure we do just that in the Ilkeston area.

“Failing to act now would result in substantial costs at the end of the PFI term to either extend the contract or purchase a new police station.”
