Over to You…

New police consultation project puts local people in the driving seat

Derbyshire residents are being asked to air their views about local policing in a series of public consultation events.

The ‘Over to You’ consultation programme will be launched next week by Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Charles and Chief Constable Mick Creedon to find out what local people think about policing and the broader crime agenda.

The initiative replaces the ‘Have Your Say’ consultation as the County’s largest annual feedback scheme and will invite local people to take part in a survey about policing. A series of events will be held over the coming months to promote the questionnaire and help Commissioner Charles understand the differing needs of Derbyshire’s diverse communities. The information will be used to guide the Commissioner’s plans to make the County safer and help the Force allocate resources to where they are needed most.

The first ‘Over to You’ event will take place on Tuesday (February 18) at The Pavements Centre in Chesterfield and will be closely followed by similar activities in supermarkets, shopping centres, marketplaces and businesses across Derbyshire. Commissioner Charles will also ask for support from key community groups such as Neighbourhood Watch and 50+ Forums to encourage residents to take part in the survey.

Commissioner Charles said: “I want to hear from local people about the issues that impact on their quality of life whether this is anti-social behaviour, parking, speeding motorists, dog fouling or alcohol and drug related issues for example, to more serious areas of criminality such as burglary and violence.  Then we will work with our partners to address the problems that cause most concern.

“As a result of the responses to last year’s consultation I’ve made changes to my Police and Crime Plan to reflect the views expressed by Derbyshire residents.

Chief Constable Mick Creedon said: “A key part of policing is consulting with the public and capturing their views. That is why the ‘Over to You’ events are essential and will play a key part in helping allocate police resources effectively.

“The consultation also provides members of the public with an opportunity to meet with officers and share their views.”

The ‘Over to You’ programme will run from February to October and the results will be published in December. A key element of the consultation events will be providing crime prevention advice to residents to help them protect themselves and their property from crime.
