Commissioner advertises to find best Deputy

The search is on for a Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner to help newly elected Derbyshire Commissioner Alan Charles reach out to all the county’s communities.

Mr Charles is advertising for a deputy who shares his vision for the county’s policing and who will work alongside him in delivering his police and crime plan.

“I am looking for a good communicator and a good listener, with experience in strategic planning and overseeing multi million pound budgets,” he said. “It’s a highly demanding role so it’s very important that I make the right choice. It needs someone who has both the ability and the commitment to establishing effective working relationships quickly to the benefit of our communities.”

His aim is to appoint a deputy with all the necessary abilities to support him and meet the expectations of the taxpayer.  “I feel that going down the advertising and selection route will be the most appropriate way of identifying the best person for the job,” he said.  “An open advertisement is a very transparent way of doing this, which I hope the public will appreciate.”

The successful candidate will be required to travel extensively throughout Derbyshire to bring back the views of the public. He or she will work with partners in the voluntary sector, local authorities, Government Departments and the police.

Every Police and Crime Commissioner is entitled to appoint a Deputy to help them undertake what is acknowledged as a demanding role.  In Derbyshire the successful candidate will receive 75 per cent of the Commissioner’s nationally set salary of £75,000.

Mr Charles, who believes that community policing is “the lifeblood of safer streets,” wants to ensure that this kind of policing retains its central role in protecting Derbyshire people from all categories of crime and social nuisance.
